There may be no such thing as a free lunch. But for millions of taxpayers, it shouldn’t cost a dime to prepare and file a tax return this year.
Free File, an annual program from the Internal Revenue Service, is once again available to all taxpayers. With Free File, you can submit an electronic return for free and, depending on your income, also receive tax-prep help at no cost.
In addition, several tax-software companies are offering basic versions of their tools, also at no charge.
The hitch: The more complicated your tax situation, the less likely one of these freebies will suit you. But for many people, especially young adults with starting salaries and few deductions to claim, it should cost you little or nothing to file a return.
Here’s what you need to know.
Check out Free File first. To access Free File, you must go to the IRS’ designated site, freefile.irs.gov. Once there, you’ll find two options.
The first is Free File tax software, which is available to anyone with an adjusted gross income of $58,000 or less. (If you don’t know your adjusted gross income, check for the figure on your tax return from last year.)
Eligible taxpayers can choose among 16 tax-software companies, including H&R Block, TurboTax and TaxAct.
One warning: You may not get your top pick. Free File participants often have additional restrictions, such as residency and age. But young taxpayers especially should find plenty of options. H&R Block, for example, is available to anyone under age 51. If your adjusted gross income exceeds $58,000, making you ineligible for the free software, you can use Free File’s second option: fillable forms.
The Free File fillable forms are essentially electronic versions of the paper return. You don’t get tax-prep help — no questions prompting you to deduct, say, student loan interest — but the forms will help by doing calculations for you. And once completed, you can file electronically, for free.
The forms allow taxpayers “to file electronically and help minimize some of the common math errors that taxpayers make,” said David Williams, an IRS senior executive, in a recent press conference.
The IRS’s Free File program applies to federal returns only. But 21 states also offer a free file option. To see the list, go to the Free File website, then click on the link “Get Started.”
Try other free versions online. Earn too much to qualify for the Free File software but still need tax-prep help?
This year, many of the same companies participating in the Free File program also offer a free option on their individual websites.
What’s the difference? You may have to put up with ads for additional services that carry fees.
“There are no pitches for our paid product through the Free File site,” said Jessi Dolmage, a public relations manager for TaxAct.
What’s more, not all forms may be included in each of the companies’ free online versions.
The Free File version of H&R Block, for example, includes Schedule C, which you need if you have earnings or losses from a business (say you are self-employed or you moonlight for extra cash). The free version on H&R’s website does not (the form is available in paid versions, however).
And as with Free File, state returns are not included. Fees to prepare and file one will vary by company. H&R Block and TurboTax, for example, charge $27.95 per state return. TaxAct is one of the cheapest, billing $14.95.
